When you don't care about another person's problems, how do you refrain from being rude?

I'd try responding with "I don't know. Why do YOU think you're so unlucky?" and watch what happens. And the keep asking those sorts of questions until she got uncomfortable enough to change the subject, sort of like a pive-aggressive therapist. :-)
