Is the idea of a "Lazer Gun" still in use?

For a long time the idea of a "Lazer Gun" as a use of weaponry was thought to be a product of the near future, this was implemented into many Comic books and such. Is it still possible? Or have today's scientists calculated that such an idea is unlogical/obsolete?
